Arrests in London of Turkish Hunger Strike supporters

Gurkan Gurr and Rory O'Driscoll plus four other activists for the Turkish Socialist and Death Fast causes have just been charged in London under the Terrorism Act. All six, four men and two women, have been charged with Membership of a proscribed organisation and controlling property or assets of a proscribed group.

Three men and three women have appeared at Bow Street Magistrates Court charged with being members of a terrorist organisation. The six, five Turkish nationals and one British, are alleged to be involved with DHKP-C, a Turkish left-wing organisation also known as the Revolutionary People's Front. The organisation was proscribed by the Home Secretary in March.

All six were remanded on bail and are due to appear at the same court again on 13 January. Two of the men, Rory O'Driscoll, 29, and Allaatin Kalander, 36 are from Stoke Newington, north London. Gurkan Gur, 38, is from Hyde, Cheshire. One woman, Songul Ozgur, 27, is from Brighton, East Sussex, Selver Kapan, 30, is from Islington, north London and Birten Kalayci, also 30, is from Finsbury Park, north London.

It is alleged that some of the defendants were found in possession of magazines, videos and posters supporting DHKP-C.

District Judge Timothy Workman ordered all the defendants to surrender their passports.
