To
brief interested groups and individuals on the current
situation of the Republican prisoners in Maghaberry
Jail, who have been on dirty protest for two months
seeking Political Status and segregation from loyalist
and criminal inmates.
The
meeting will take place in the Teachers Club (36 Parnell
Square), Dublin 1, on Friday 5th September, starting
at 7.30pm.
The
meeting will take the form of addresses by relatives
of Republican POWs, who will outline the conditions
of the prisoners and their campaign to be recognised
as political prisoners. There will be a short update
on support activities so far in Dublin. The meeting
will then be thrown open to questions and a discussion
on ways to raise public awareness of the plight of
the POWs and a campaign to pressurise politicians
into taking action on the
issue.
In
recent weeks a number of groups have been active in
Dublin raising public awareness via street leafletings,
at GAA matches, etc. The groups involved include,
Na Fianna Éireann, Working Class Action, Republican
Sinn Féin, the IRSP, supporters of Fourthwrite
and Republicans not aligned to any organisation. In
addition other groups have issued messages of support
in relation to the Prisoners' campaign.
The
organisers of the meeting hope that a broad front
of as many groups as possible will be willing to become
actively involved in a campaign to secure Political
Status for the Republican Prisoners. No one is being
asked to support any of the political opinions of
the prisoners or their groups.
The
Four Demands of the Prisoners are:
o Segregation from loyalist and criminal prisoners
o Recognition as a group
o The right to have their own spokesman
o A wing of their own
