The Blanket - A Journal of Protest & Dissent

Principle, Pragmatism And Lies

Ed Moloney • 20 January, 2003

Fr Sean McManus might better have understood my book on the IRA if he had ignored the religious analogy. It may well be the case that Ruairi O Bradaigh is a classicist and Gerry Adams believes in historical consciousness. If what Fr McManus is trying to say is that O Bradaigh believes in holding to principles and Adams elevates pragmatism, he may well be right. But what has this to do with my book?

What I was trying to do as far as modern Irish republicanism is concerned was to ask the equivalent of this question, one that has more relevance to the Catholic church, I submit, than arcane debates about Vatican 2. The question is: who has been humping the altar boys, for how long and who lied about it?

The Blanket - A Journal of Protest & Dissent

Follow the path of the unsafe, independent thinker. Expose your ideas to the dangers of controversy. Speak your mind and fear less the label of 'crackpot' than the stigma of conformity. And on issues that seem important to you, stand up and be counted at any cost.
