The Irish Hero – A Multidisciplinary Conference in Irish Studies

Conference in Irish Studies, 2-3 April 2004

Centre for Irish Stuides

Many different men and women have been thought of, talked about, written about and memorialized as representing the heroic values in Irish society. Such ‘heroes’ have been drawn from many disparate areas of Irish life, such as the military, politics, literature and sport.

This conference is bringing together experts from across the spectrum of Irish Studies, and around the world, to consider such themes as:

  • Heroes and History
  • Heroes Made and Re-Made
  • Heroes and Literature
  • Heroes and Writers
  • Heroes and Sport
  • Portraying the Hero
  • Commemorating the Hero
  • The Hero in Folklore
  • Television Heroes
  • National Heroes

Plenary speakers will include: Professor Robert Savage (Boston College), Professor Richard Holt (De Montfort University), Maria Moynihan (Chief Executive, St Patrick’s Festival), Sighle Bhreathnach-Lynch (Curator of Irish Paintings, National Gallery of Ireland) and Professor Dáithí Ó Hógáin (University College, Dublin).

For more information, full programme details and registration forms go to: The Irish Hero Conference or call Samantha Williams: 091-512428 email: irishstudies@nuigalway.ie

All censorships exist to prevent any one from challenging current conceptions and existing institutions. All progress is initiated by challenging current conceptions, and executed by supplanting existing institutions. Consequently the first condition of progress is the removal of censorships.
- George Bernard Shaw
