The Blanket

The Blanket - A Journal of Protest & Dissent
Free Joe & Clare
Davy Carlin

The jailing of the two Socialist Party members Joe Higgins and Clare Daly shows clearly the corrupt priorities of the Southern Government. While the Ansbacher gang roam about free and with seeing the amnesties given out to the rich for their tax scams, working class activists are being banged up for peacefully standing firm against an unjust Bin Tax. The concerted effort by the media against both persons in a ‘red’ scare and against the Anti Bin Tax campaign shows exactly the impact the campaign has and is having. The campaign has brought together many activists from various communities, trade unionists, political parties, various organisations and individuals to stand against both the Bin Tax and secondly the repressive measures now being used against peaceful protesters. The campaign has seen peaceful actions and large public meetings in many areas in and around Dublin with thousands of working class people participating.

This situation calls firstly for continual widening of support within the trade unions and communities looking for mass action against this unjust double tax. Secondly, somethong similar is needed in a widening call for solidarity both at home and internationally for all that have been and may be imprisoned within this cause of working class struggle. It is we collectively, and in solidarity, against them, it is a working class struggle against a corrupt ruling class interest. It is in that political and economic sense that the phrase, ‘unity is strength’ rings and is political and practically all the more important at this time.

All censorships exist to prevent any one from challenging current conceptions and existing institutions. All progress is initiated by challenging current conceptions, and executed by supplanting existing institutions. Consequently the first condition of progress is the removal of censorships.
