The Death Fast enters its 6th year

Let us accept the prisoners in struggle as our own

Tayad Committee (Association in support of prisoners and their families in Turkey)

The Death Fast resistance which started in Turkey on October 20, 2000 to oppose the opening of the F-Type isolation prisons, is now entering its sixth year. So far there have been 120 martyrs in this struggle in which the political prisoners are showing the same determination now as on the first day. About 600 people have been left crippled as a result of force-feeding by the state.

Even though the state apparatus of Turkey has done everything possible to break the resistance to F-Type prisons which are a merciless means of attack aimed at the whole people, the resistance fighters of the Death Fast have frustrated all attacks and continued to defend the people, even at the cost of their lives. For the F-Type isolation prisons, which were opened between 19 and 22 December 2000 with the death of 28 revolutionary prisoners, have the aim of intimidating the people and deterring those who struggle for rights and freedoms and making them capitulate. The fact that the state uses repression and arrests, torture, censorship, forced transfers and massacres to try and break the resistance of the revolutionary prisoners clearly shows that it cannot bring the resistance under control and cannot make the fighting prisoners surrender.

Besides the fascist state apparatus in Turkey, the EU bears responsibility for the 120 deaths. The EU had said, "Solve your prison problem" and merely stood by as people died slowly in the isolation cells, as well as tacitly accepting the prison massacre of 19-22 December and the Armutlu massacre (November 2001), or else it touched on it briefly in a way that openly supported fascism in Turkey.

It is the task of all to support the resistance to isolation, which is a form of death by torture. If w want to prevent further deaths to add to the 120 that have already occurred, then there is no choice but to accept the demands of the prisoners in struggle. Their demands are legitimate and represent the future of the people.

THE STATE APPARATUS OF TURKEY AND THE EU IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATHS.

ISOLATION MUST BE LIFTED TO PUT AN END TO THE DEATHS.

LET US TAKE THE CAUSE OF THE FIGHTING PRISONERS AS OUR OWN.

We call on everyone to support our activities:

Accordingly we make the following calls:

  • That red balloons with the pictures of martyrs be released in front of the parliament buildings - on 20 October we will hold demonstrations in front of the parliaments of several European countries.
  • On the weekend of 22 and 23 October in associations, at work, at home and indeed everywhere, hunger strikes will take place.
  • To take part in events organised in associations under the rubric "WHY THE DEATH FAST HAS LASTED FIVE YEARS AND IS ENTERING ITS SIXTH".
  • On 22 and 23 October, to send letters and postcards to prisoners in struggle.
  • To send protest messages to the leading officials of the Republic of Turkey, the Justice Minister Cemil Cicek and the heads of penal institutions, by telephone, fax and mail.

There is no such thing as a dirty word. Nor is there a word so powerful, that it's going to send the listener to the lake of fire upon hearing it.
